Who are we?
The Bilingual Initiative started in 2003 as a special program at the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey, and Humacao Campuses. Since 2006, it became part of the Río Piedras Campus and is now located in the Faculty of General Studies.
This initiative aims to establish a bond between the University of Puerto Rico and the Hispanic communities in the United States in order to provide them with the opportunity to study at a prestigious institution accredited by the Middle States Association in Puerto Rico. Our main goal is to give scholars with Hispanic heritage the possibility to obtain a degree while receiving the support of language transition.
During the first year, the Bilingual Initiative offers courses of the general studies component such as: Social Sciences, Humanities, Biology and Physics in English with a transition to Spanish. In addition, students will take Spanish as a Second Language courses and attend workshops and tutoring sessions. This is to ensure that they are able to academically succeed when they take their courses in Spanish during their second year at the University of Puerto Rico. Also, the students will participate in extracurricular activities to enhance their relationship with other students and the University's community.
